Three million people are preparing to jet off and enjoy a little sun or winter sports this Christmas, it has been revealed.

According to research by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), skiers and snowboarders are heading to the peaks, while those looking for a little festive sun are off to destinations including Tenerife to enjoy a seasonal break with a twist.

And the ski season got off to a flying start this year as snow fell on the slopes early leading many resorts to open their doors ahead of schedule.

President of the ABTA Justin Fleming said: "Holidays - especially at this time of year - are considered to be so much more than a luxury. They provide a valuable time to unwind and spend quality time with family," Travel Mole reports.

Britons looking to make such a getaway before the season is out may be interested to know that they can book cheap winter flights with Jet2.com, the budget airline.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail's Pete Hardy has claimed that early snowfalls make the perfect time to grab the skis and head for the slopes.
