Britons who are planning to jet off for a little winter shopping excursion in Italy have been reminded that if the shops get too much they can always escape to the beach for a spot of relaxation.

Guardian reader Sissi writes that situated just 30 to 40 minutes outside of Rome is the Ostia beach where holidaymakers are offered the chance to wind down with a frosty beverage and an ice-cream and soak up a little sun.

And she adds that the shopping need not be totally forgotten as many vendors will approach tourists on the beach to allow them the chance to purchase souvenirs and gifts without even having to get up.

However, if visitors want to really get away from the hustle and bustle of shopping, there are still areas of the beach where they will be left in peace, she adds.

Britons planning the shopping trip of their dreams in the Italian capital may be interested to know that they can book cheap flights to Rome with Jet2.com.

And while they are there they may wish to book a Rome Shopping Guide, which one Guardian reader claims reveals some of the history of the city's stores.
