A few years ago, it would have been unimaginable to see tourism on Rhodes languishing but the once darling of British holidays has been suffering recently. Encouragingly though, the tourist board for Rhodes is reporting a sharp up-turn in visitor numbers to the island – perhaps indicating that Greece is back in favour.
According to the tourist board on Rhodes international arrivals at the airport are up 132% in April 2011 compared to the same month the year before.
"Greece is making a comeback this year”
Factors like the weather, natural beauty and relatively short flight times have often contributed to Greece’s popularity. However, a desire for short, luxury breaks is thought to be a key contributor to this sharp rise in visitors. Tom Panagos, PR manager for Rhodes Toruism has said:
"Greece is making a comeback this year and Rhodes is exceptionally positioned for those Brits who want to rediscover this all-time classic destination.
"The weather, the beaches and the food have always been there, but over the last few years we have focused on upgrading our tourism product, with more than 100 luxury hotels on the island, a new terminal and a new marina opening soon."
Jet2.com has plenty of cheap flights to Rhodes available this summer, giving holidaymakers ample opportunity to re-discover the beautiful Greek island.
