Barcelona’s Summer Festival, popularly known as ‘The Grec’, is the city’s most famous festival and one of the most celebrated art festivals in the world. This year will mark the event’s 35th anniversary.
The event has been growing in stature and popularity since it began in 1976 when a bunch of young theatre performers decided to breathe new life into the Catalan arts scene. Ever since then The Grec has brought together some of the world’s finest musical, theatre, dance and circus acts at various locations around Barcelona.

Each year the organisers aim to bring something new and exciting to thrill audiences of all ages from all over the world. Musical highlights from previous years includes Brian Wilson of Beach Boys fame as well as swinging sixties icon Marianne Faithful. Audiences have also enjoyed more contemporary acts like Craig David and Joss Stone.
Various events and performances are easy to find. Most of the events take place at the ‘Teatre Grec’ a beautiful Greek style amphitheatre on the hill of Montjuic built in 1929 by the famous Catalan architect Ramon Reventos.
This year the festival will take place from June 17th-July 31st. Cheap flights to Barcelona depart from Leeds and Glasgow, and from March 2012 flights will also depart from Manchester four times weekly with prices starting from £29.99 one way including taxes.
