It’s one of the highlights of Spain’s summer festivals when thousands of fruit-flingers arrive in the tiny Spanish village of Bunyol near Valencia for the biggest tomato fight in the world.
It’s all in good fun of course, and a crazy Spanish tradition dating back to 1945 when apparently a bunch of locals got carried away in a restaurant food fight and the rest as they say is history!
Last year around 30,000 people turned up to throw more than 125,000 kilos of tomatoes at whoever they please, but be warned - it’s every man and woman for themselves.
There are no winners at the end of the event; it’s just the sheer thrill of pelting softened tomatoes at strangers that attracts the large crowds. The event lasts for two hours.
La Tomatina Rules
As you would expect it is illegal to bring any other kind of fruit or objects that could cause an accident during the event. Tomatoes must be crushed to soften them before they are thrown to prevent any injuries.
La Tomatina takes place on August 31st in Bunyol, Spain. Bunyol village is only a couple of hours drive north of Alicante Airport. With cheap flights to Alicante available at Jet2.com, you could be joining in the tomato-throwing fun on the last Wednesday of August.
