Sightseeing & Culture on a Weekend Break or City Break in Prague
Prague is a wonderful city to walk around and get lost in, easily explored
on foot. There are so many little side street and alleys throughout the city
to explore during your cheap weekend break in Prague.
You cannot miss the Charles Bridge, which joins the Stare Mesto to Mala Strana
- one of the world’s most beautiful bridges and probably Prague’s
most famous sight. During the day it is bustling with artists and souvenir
traders and at night boasts some of the best views of Prague Castle, St Vitus’s
Cathedral and Old Town.
Spend a couple of hours on your city break in Prague exploring the complex
of buildings, churches and gardens which make up Prague Castle – take
the tramway and you can avoid climbing the hill! Inside the grounds you’ll
find the lovely Golden Lane which has beautifully restored houses –
previously home to castle servants, the cities goldsmiths, alchemists and
writers (including Franz Kafka), these buldings now house cafes and shops
selling arts, crafts and souvenirs. At St Vitus’s Cathedral you can
rent a radio guide and absorb the surroundings of this magnificent building
dominating the city of Prague’s skyline. The windows of the Castle are
impressive works of art. During the weekend, take a trip to the top of the
tower for an amazing view of the city.
Prague’s heart lies in the Old Town with its constant buzz of activity
during the week and all weekend, both day and night. The Old Town Square is
home to the Hall with its observation platform and Astronomical Clock with
an hourly display. Take in the impressive Church of Our Lady before Tyn which
dominating the square with its breathtaking architecture.
During your weekend city break, take a five minute stroll from the Old Town
and you come across the Jewish Town and Synagogue – this used to be
one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe, during the weekend walking
guided tours of the area are available.
Wenceslas Square (which isn’t actually square!) is the main street
in Prague’s commercial district, if it’s shopping you’re
after then head to here! Lined with hotels, cafes, restaurants, bars, nightclubs
and casinos. It’s an area of contrasts offering everything from top
eateries to dancing girls.
As night descends, take your pick from the traditional pubs and restaurants
available, followed by a visit to one of the opera houses or theatres. If
you still have the energy or fancy a more lively night you can dance the night
away in one of Europe’s hottest clubs and bars!
Party On in Prague!
You may notice the Czechs are a nation of brewers and beer drinkers! The beer
is excellent, cheap and must be sampled (at any time of the day!).
If you’re in Prague for a party weekend, head to Karlovy Lazne next
to the Charles Bridge, it’s the biggest nightclub in Central Europe
which takes over five floors – each with their own sound. There’s
something for everyone here and the drinks are cheap! Rumour has it the cocktail
bar does the BEST black russian! Other great nightspots to visit during your
weekend in Prague include the Klub Lavka near the river, Roxy Club, Radost
FX. If you are at the Castle side of the bridge check out Jo’s bar,
cheap on the tap beers, great food and open until the early hours –
the Sunday brunch is also legendary for recovering after the night before!
Whether you go for the shopping, drinking or sightseeing, Prague will not
disappoint – a truly magnificent city of contrasts, perfect for a cheap
