Sightseeing should be on your agenda on a short or weekend break in Rome. Between the Capitoline and Palatine hills lie the Forum and the Colosseum. Though little is left of the Forum today you can still imagine the grandeur of Caesars seat of power. Next to the Forum you will find the recently restored walls of the great Colosseum. After 1975 years this ancient amphitheatre in the city of Rome is still hosting performances though these are musical and theatrical rather than battling gladiators! A short distance from here you will find the impressive piazza del Campidoglio. Designed by Michelangelo and taking more than a century to complete, this piazza is home to the Capitoline Museums, which are among the world’s oldest public museums.

Another must see whilst on a weekend break in Rome is the Pantheon, built as a temple this is one of Ancient Rome’s best-preserved remains. A walk around the Quirinale district is recommended whilst on a short break, here you will find the romantic Trevi Fountain, with its stunning rococo design.

The vast park of Villa Borghese contains a great boating lake, the gorgeous Galleria Borghese art gallery and Italy’s national collection of modern art at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna.

No weekend break to Rome is complete without a visit to the Vatican City. Founded in AD 90 this independent city houses some famous sights including St Peter’s Basilica. Visitors can climb the many stairs to see the fantastic views of the Vatican Gardens, Bernini’s piazza and the city beyond. Under the chapels, one containing Michelangelo’s Pietà, are the tombs of recent popes, including John Paul II. Further down, the Necropolis is where many believe St Peter is buried.

The Vatican Museums are a definite must to visit on your weekend break. The basilica at the end of the route has the Sistine Chapel, containing Michelangelo’s frescoes of the Creation and the Last Judgement, and luscious Renaissance works by Botticelli, Rosselli and Signorelli.

It may be difficult to cram all of the above into one day so a weekend or short break in Rome is ideal, as the city has so much to offer. The Vatican City itself can be reserved for a full day trip!

The piazza di Spagna has some great shops woth visitng on a weekend break including Prada and Giorgio Armani. For something a bit cheaper go to via Nazionale, via del Corso and via Cola di Rienzo for great high-street fashions. For good second hand bargains, try the via Sannio market, near San Giovanni metro.

Cheap fresh produce is sold at the street markets at Campo de’ Fiori and at piazza dell’Unità, near the Vatican.

Rome has many fantastic street cafes that sell a good variety of snacks and light lunches including pizza slices, pasta, sandwiches, etc. As you would expect there are a variety of good pizzerias in Rome, along with an abundance of restaurants serving great Italian pasta. At many restaurants there are either menus of the day (menu del giorno) or special tourists' menus (turistico).
