When looking for a short ski break you need to make sure that the weather will be suitabke. If you are looking for pretty much guaranteed good snow Val d’Isere is a safe bet. Situated in a remote valley at a high altitude there are a wealth of off-piste runs served well by lifts, great for any short ski break.

Boasting a longer season than many (November to May) due to its height, the resort is most popular with intermediate and experienced skiers when it comes to taking a short ski break. Val d’Isere village itself is a lively resort with plenty on offer in terms of nightlife and restaurants.

The resort offers over 300km of piste and fantastic off-piste ensuring that there’s no chance of getting bored during your stay. The neighbouring resort of Tignes is easily reachable opening up numerous further runs for the more adventurous, though this is not ideal if you're planning a ski weekend for beginner.

Once on your short ski break, you'll see that the slopes themselves are divided into three main areas; Bellevarde, Solaise and Col de L’Iseran. Bellevarde is home to Val d’Isere’s most well-known course, which is easily accessible either by funicular from La Daille or by the gondola from the centre of the village. Solaise is easy to access either by the Solaise Express chair-lift or the cable-car; it offers gentle pistes and sunny plateaus. Venture a little further and you will find Col de L’Iseran, a great choice if you are looking for an easy day with magnificent off-piste scenery.

Val Thorens

A perfect destination for a short ski break, Val Thorens is the highest of the resorts in the Alps, which pretty much guarantees good snow. The attraction of Val Thorens is it’s traditional alpine charm, which can be missed in some of the purpose built resorts. It also offers some great nursery slopes amongst it’s more challenging pistes. Many feel the best time to visit is towards the beginning or end of a season, mainly due to it’s high altitude and plumiting temperatures.

Alpe d’Huez

A large resort, with 236km of downhill piste. The village itself is reasonably highly based at 1860m, meaning skiing back to your chalet is quite possible. Alpe d’Huez benefits from a large snow-making system helping to maintain good standards later into the season. With a wide range of slopes for varied ability levels Alpe d’Huez is a clever choice if you’re are in a group of mixed abilities. Good leisure facilities, restaurants and bars are also easy to find in the resort making a great choice for groups!

Les Arcs

Les Arcs encompasses four purpose-built villages and being linked well to the area of La Plagne around 264 miles of runs are available to you. If you are at an intermediate level then Les Arcs is a great destination, with several routes that have both challenging or easier options to suit every mood. One of it’s best selling points is that the resort is reasonably traffic free, for the majority this means the snow is literally on the doorstep! A large proportion of the runs in Les Arcs are higher than 2000ft, which means decent snow should be available. For North facing slopes fhead for Col de la Chal and Le Pré.

Chamonix

Chamonix is famous for it’s challenging terrain. Many feel it is more suited to the experienced skier, yet there are areas suitable for beginners at Les Houches and Le Tour. Seen by many as a very disconnected resort, it can seem a little hard to get to grips with. Once you do however it’s charm becomes obvious. Fantastic views across Vallée Blanche and the Mont Blanc area are simply unmissable. The runs on les Grands Montets are the safest bet for good snow late into the season, North facing and at 3275m you shouldn’t be disappointed. Le Tour, though possibly not as demanding is also a wise choice later in the season.
