Skiing & Snowboarding in Alpe d'Huez - Great for a Weekend Ski Break in France
Alpe d'Huez is renowned for its extensive varied skiing terrain, high-levels of sunshine, and the 21 hairpin bends of the ascent to the resort which test the riders of the Tour de France to the max. The resort of Alpe d'Huez is fairly well spread out across the mountainside.
Fantastic Non Ski Activities in Alpe d'Huez
The Avenue des Jeux, the main boulevard, offers a swimming pool, ice rink, shops, bars and restaurants, and is linked to the satellite areas by bus or lift. If you are after a quieter picture postcard resort you can look to the older villages which also make up part of the ski area: Villard-Reculas, Oz-en-Oisans, Auris and Vaujany.
Skiing & Snowboarding for All Levels of Experience
The skiing & snowboarding in Alpe d'Huez is extensive and challenging, rating alongside the big French destinations for choice. The altitude is high and there is glacial skiing, however the ‘island of the sun' can suffer later in the season for coverage. The main cable-car (the DMC) above the village ascends the Pic Blanc to 3330m, giving access to the Sarenneglacier and Europe's longest piste (a 17km black run). Lower down the slopes the areas are wide and open, excellent for a ski weekend for beginners.
Fantastic Snowboarding Conditions Throughout The Season
Alpe d'Huez is popular with snowboarders, ideal for a weekend or short break. The resort offers lots of free-riding for the more experienced, however beginners will have to face learning to use the drag-lifts as the main access to the slopes.
Fabulous Apres Ski Facilities Whilst on a Ski or Snowboarding Break
Après ski is well-covered by numerous bars, offering live music and even tapas – with a wide choice of restaurants. The superb sports-centre, indoor and outdoor pools, and Olympic-size ice-rink are all covered by the lift pass and there is an ice-driving school to slide around on as well. Helicopter flights across the valley, which aren't prohibitively expensive also give access to the sister resort of Les Deux Alpes, for even more skiing and thrills.
