Split is also home to St.Duje's cathedral, the oldest cathedral building in the world. The beautiful cathedral bell tower provides an unrivalled panoramic view of the city and surrounding islands. Roman architecture and culture can also be experienced at Peristil square, Jupiter's temple and the nearby town of Salona. Salona is a 10 minute bus ride from Split and was one of the biggest towns in the Roman Empire. It was the capital of Dalmatia (Roman province) and it showcases an amphitheatre, basilica, cemetery and many other landmarks synonymous with the Roman era.

Varos is one of the oldest parts of town. Once inhabited by the city's peasants and fishermen this area is now a fantastic remnant of Croatian history and culture. Charming winding streets and beautiful small houses make this area a must see. Split also houses the Archaeological Museum and Galerija Mestrovic. The museum is home to many interesting artifacts from the Roman era and the Gallery contains many works from the famous Croatian sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic.
