Sightseeing in Venice
One of the best ways to experience Venice is simply by meandering through
the city streets; however there are some specific sights you won’t want
to miss on your city break in Venice. The Basilica di San Marco situated on
the beautiful Piazza in the San Marco area houses the Marciano museum. The
Basilica itself was started in the 9th century but the majority of what’s
now on show was built in the 11th century. The fantastic aspect being that
every inch of ceiling and pavement within the building is covered in gold,
Byzantine mosaics. The Grande Canal, particularly between the Piazza and the
train station a Ferrovia is the ideal place to cruise the river. Travel by
gondola or Vaporetti and simply sit back and enjoy the view of some of the
most magnificent buildings in the city. Other famous buildings you won’t
want to miss on your city break include the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo
which also contains some beautiful sculpture and the Scuola Grande di San
Rocco which is somewhat of a shrine to Tintoretti, with 50 of his great works
in display.
Art in Venice
The Accademia houses a collection of art between the 13th and 18th century,
organised in chronological order it provides a wonderful insight into the
most fantastic Venetian art.
For modern art, both painting and sculpture the Collezione Peggy Guggenheim
is a popular choice. With examples of various movements including cubism,
surrealism, expressionism and various abstract pieces there are famous works
by the likes of Pollock, Kandinsky, Dali and Picasso to name a few. You'd
be mad to miss this on a cheap city break in Venice.
Food & Drink
It is increasingly popular for bars and restaurants to merge into one, but
no-where is this more noticeable than in the city of Venice. The majority
of bars will serve a minimum of sandwiches or small snacks, known as "cicheti".
There are hundreds of restaurants offering everything from traditional Venetian
cuisine, pizza and seafood. The difficult thing while in Venice if finding
something cheap or reasonably priced, it is available but you will need to
