Things To See And Do
Venice has sistieri - or six 'quarters' and you will want
to explore all of them, if not on your first visit then on your second and
third. There are many sights to see from the beautiful St Marks (San Marco)
Basilica and Doges' Palace to the 16th-century Ponte di Rialto over
the Grand Canal.
Besides the Piazza San Marco , the city centre is filled with picturesque
back 'streets' brimming with architectural gems. Restaurants and
bars abound (Harry's Bar being the famous haunt of Ernest Hemingway)
and museums are overflowing with art treasures by great masters such as Tinoretto
and Titan.
Shopping
Many of the big Italian fashion labels have outlets in the Mercerie which
runs from the Piazza to within a few metres of the Rialto Bridge and to the
west of the Piazza and the Rialto remains one of Europe's most charming
marketplaces.
Beyond The City
If you have time, visit the Lido, a leafy suburb of the city that becomes
a long, bustling beach resort in the summer months. It is the place to be
during the Venice film festival. Or visit Murano, island home of the famous
Venetian glassmaking.
The Veneto is a good place to start on a wider visit of Italy. The region
is the country's third largest wine growing area so a good place to
sample Soave and Valpolicella. Venice also offers a gateway to the wonderful
beaches on the Adriatic coast.
